Annual Church Thanksgiving Dinner - November 20 at 5:30 PM

Our annual church Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Sunday, Nov 20, 5:30pm. This event was created to allow our church family to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal together. This year as part of our Thanksgiving celebration, the Marshall Fundamental High School Chorus will be singing under the direction of Veronica Ota. We look forward to their performance and to a recognition of this year’s class of new church members.  A homemade turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served. PW will also host a fun gift basket raffle to add to the festivities. It promises to be a great time for the entire family!  Dinner tickets can be purchased through the church office (626-791-4271) or via Deacons or PW after church service.

Prices will be $7.00 ea., $3.00 for children, children under 5 are free, or $25.00 for a household family of 4 or more. Diners are asked to bring plates and flatware from home to make our meal a “green” experience.  Paper goods will be available for those who are unable to do so. We encourage everyone to come and share the meal together in the Social Hall, take outs are discouraged. Bring your family and friends for good food and good fellowship!

As part of the festivities at our church Thanksgiving Dinner, PW will sponsor a great gift basket raffle. Any interested members and friends may donate a basket to raffle. Big or small, and any theme at all will be greatly accepted. Baskets may be brought to the Social Hall after church service or before 5:00pm on Sunday, Nov.20. Proceeds from the basket raffle will benefit Presbyterian Women

Got Persimmons?

What a strange question, but we would like to request the donation of persimmons to be used as table décor for our Thanksgiving Dinner on November 20. A long-standing tradition for this event, the fruit will grace our tables during the meal, and will be taken home by attendees afterwards. So any extra fruit from your trees would be appreciated. Persimmons may be dropped off in the church office any day from 8:00am – 12n or brought to church on Sunday.

Minute for Missions - La Casa de San Gabriel

Founded by the Rev. César and Angelita Lizárraga in 1946, La Casa celebrates 70 years of service in San Gabriel, Calif.. This historic town, one of the oldest in the state, grew up around the Spanish Franciscan mission. Today descendents of Gabrieleno/Tongva Native Americans; immigrants from Mexico, Central America, Taiwan, China, the Philippines and Viet Nam; African- and Euro-Americans live here—and come to La Casa.

The mission statement sums it up: “La Casa enhances the well-being of the families it serves by providing educational and social services that promote self-sufficiency and motivation for lifelong learning.” Classes in parenting (U.S. style), English as a second language, financial literacy and nutrition help newcomers adapt to the cultural norms. A food pantry provides emergency supplies to La Casa’s families and to homeless people who stop by. New clothing is available to children in special need, thanks to a partnership with a volunteer from nearby San Marino.

Parents pay a modest amount based on their income. The sliding-scale tuition provides about one-third of the total cost of La Casa’s program. All other funds must be raised with donations from individuals, churches, service clubs, businesses, foundations and the Presbytery of San Gabriel, which owns the property and provides a monthly grant.

To support this work, please give to the Rev. César Lizárraga and Angelita Lizárraga Fund (323) 692-3500 A1478, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation.

Rummage Sale

It was a extremely busy, hectic time, but we survived our annual PW rummage sale!  Our Women’s Association/ Presbyterian Women have undertaken this event for over 30 years, and it remains our main fundraiser for the year, and a mainstay within our community.

Thank you to everyone for their many donations of goods and clothing, and to the many hands and hearts who helped with setting up the big rack, shoe rack, and tables, sorting and pricing, and selling, lunch, and clean up of the whole event. From 97 to 2 years old, everyone pitched in. Thank you to: our Board of Deacons, Ann and Kristen Allin, Merilou Anderson, Nancy Castillo, Sam and Virginia Gin,  Mark, Ambre, and Daniel Gonzales, Bob, Kevin, and Yoshiko Hayashi, Elsie Hayashi, Frances Hiraoka, Irene Hirashiki, Janie Inouye, Louise Inouye, Hideko Itano, Wandy, Larry, and Reece Jung, Avis Kawahara, Aileen Kawamoto, Betty Kiriyama, Dorothy Kirkland, Peggy and Scott Lew, Roy and Nadine McManus, Kathy Matsumoto, Mary Matsumoto, Sue Morris, Marian Sata, Joe Snodgrass, Bob and Mae Uchida, and Alice Young. (hope I got everyone!!)

This was a big undertaking for our group, and we could not have done it without your help. As our congregation and workforce grow smaller, it becomes an issue that needs to be revisited next year. But for now, we were able to raise over $1300.00 which will cover part of our PW operating costs and benevolences for the year.  Mahalo nui!

Notes: To our many donors….

Unsold items will be donated to ACTS Thrift Store, a Christian based, non-profit organization, 100% of its profits are used within the Pasadena community, some men’s items will be used by LA County General Hospital for male patients in need of clothing to return home after their hospital stay, baby items and car seats will be donated to Angel Interfaith Network for their work with new born babies and their families also at LA Co.
